“Writing Violence in Fiction”—Writing from the Peak, with Pikes Peak Writers

firearm-409252_1280

Here’s an excerpt from a recent article I wrote published online by Pikes Peak Writers—a comprehensive resource for writers in Colorado Springs, Colorado. “Writing Violence in Fiction” Write them. As realistic as possible. Make it gritty, make it stink, make it hurt. (It will dissuade the real thing.) I was fresh. It was during my second or third month of training as a cop on the street just west of Denver. I was on a traffic rotation focusing, supposedly, on that stereotypical kind of cop-thing, but it had been an exceptionally busy week. We’d rarely had the time to scratch a ticket. We ended up supplementing Patrol almost without let-up on a repeated, specific and particularly time-consuming call. For whatever reason, it was a week stacked, packed, jammed full of them. Suicides. A few a day. A planetary alignment, a phase of the moon, the weather, the upcoming holidays, who … READ MORE…

The Dulling Flood

The Dulling Flood Twitter

A Writer’s Responsibility… To maintain that spark, that light of individuality even in the face of so much else, so much media. We exist today in a sea of media, the expression of thinking minds in all stages of development, engaged in all forms of expression. The force of the whole, the global mind. The baseline. The median. The mean. The middle of the statistical bell curve. I see it as a wave, a flood, a brown and fetid tide of mediocrity threatening every minute, every day to sweep me away with it. Admonition To Myself… Do not forget the great responsibility a life of public expression brings. You have the ability to lead people’s minds in various directions. You can either lead them toward stagnant, fetid pools—or something cleaner, clearer, fresher. Something new. You literally can take another person, a reader, on a journey—out of themselves, out of their … READ MORE…

RESISTANCE — An Author’s Diary

My friend Noel and I head out for a hike and discuss the topic of my recent (written) blog post—Resistance, or writer’s block.  Be warned: Sunglasses will be worn awkwardly, all dogs (regardless of sex) will be called “buddy,” and there might be a graphic story of horrible injury and something about Kevin Bacon toward the end.     Will Burcher is a former police officer and current author of “The GAIAD,” a story of ancient secrets not quite forgotten and the positive power of global perspective. The Story of The GAIAD—An Author’s Diary

I put together this video (thanks to Noel Boyce, cameraman extraordinaire), the first in a series of video diaries of all of the processes I explored and experienced writing The GAIAD.  I’m going to be working on them throughout this period, as I begin to share this story with folks.  I have an unofficial goal to get an “episode” out weekly.  Take a look: Will Burcher is a former police officer and current author of “The GAIAD,” a story of ancient secrets not quite forgotten and the positive power of global perspective. The GAIAD—A Review (By the Author)

TheGAIADCoverWeb copy

4/5 Stars “Despite his unconventional writing style, including, perhaps, an unhealthy disdain for the traditional use of the English comma, the author makes his debut by telling an original story.  The author is clearly no Clarke or Tolkien, but with some hard work, time, and practice he might one day be regarded as Shchegolyayev or even Mbadinuju.  Certain readers of more conventional, modern, and less questionable tastes may be turned off by the inclusion of strange, macabre imagery—including, most notably and ridiculously, an old book bound in the skin of a long-dead woman’s breasts.  Globally, however, Mr. Burcher gives us a tale that we want to read, with a refreshing infusion of larger, more necessary and ultimately positive themes.” Yes.  Seriously.  It’s hard to review your own stuff.  Instead, I’ll mention how this book came about. In 2014 I was working as a cop just outside of Denver.  I had … READ MORE…

“The GAIAD” – Introductory Trailer

In anticipation of a coming release, I wanted to put something together explaining some themes and a premise or two within “The GAIAD” – available soon on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback editions.  I’m beginning the audiobook production immediately after.  Take a look: Video Script: Hi, I’m Will Burcher.  I want to tell you about a book of mine, The GAIAD. The title is a concatenation of two words – Gaia, and of course The Iliad of Homer.  The first refers to the Ancient Greek personification of the Earth, the mother goddess if you like, Gaia.  Some archaeologists think that ‘Gaia’ is actually the incorporation into the Greek Pantheon of a much, much earlier spiritual tradition, one that may have existed for tens of thousands of years – a span of time much greater than the entire span of recorded human history.  The second is the first real epic … READ MORE…

“The GAIAD” – an Excerpt

Prologue Head-on it was nearly invisible—a mere point of light as bright only as the faintest and most minor background star. If viewed obliquely, however, it was something different. The inconsequential speck began to elongate and brighten with the angle and it became a distinct and very artificial, linear form. The object began to move, slowly drifting against the ubiquitous stellar backdrop. There was a brief flash, a pulse of platinum light at the object’s tapered rear and it accelerated, its magnitude expanding and it began to stir a sense of size and mass. As it approached, the surface of it became visible—a damasked metal, reflective and shimmering. The ship was bulbous at its front, though the nose appeared sharp, as a teardrop, giving it a vaguely avian form. The rest of the structure tapered long and impossibly acute—the entirety of the craft evoking a sewing needle, traveling in … READ MORE…

An Introduction

Take a look.  The same can also be found in the About page. While Will has always known that writing and the exploration of the human condition would be his “end game,” he has sought out varied professional and educational experiences—resulting in a unique view of our contemporary collective circumstance.  He grew up in a conservative military family and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder.  While at CU, Will discovered Eastern philosophy, notably Zen Buddhism and Taoism.  He chose to obtain a degree in Economics for uniquely personal reasons—viewing the swings and fluctuations of a free-market economy seeking balance as an expression of “the Way” of natural autonomous systems, or more largely, the “Tao.”  He worked in commercial real estate and in finance before making a professional shift toward government.  Will served as both a sheriff’s deputy and police officer outside of Denver for six years.  As an officer he saw evidence … READ MORE…
